Important Steps in Leather Chemistry

Leather chemistry is the process of designing, creating and developing chemicals for the treatment of leather, in order to obtain certain results such as softer pieces, more durable leather, robust structures and special colors.
Leather is a material that comes from skins and hides of different animals. Once the skin or hide comes from the animal, it has to undergo certain treatments to turn it into the leather that can be used in the manufacture of leather products such as shoes, bags and belts just to name a few. This process of turning skins and hides into leather is called tanning and it often involves the use of certain chemicals and processes that make the skin or hide more durable and tough as we all know leather to be.

Different Tanning Processes and How They Work

For anyone who has a keen interest in leather products, it is easy to notice that leather comes in many colors and textures. This is because the tanning processes vary and each process results in a different kind of leather. To get a better understanding of the leather chemistry process, it is good to look at these tanning methods. Some of the famous methods include vegetable tanning, chrome tanning and rose-tanning among many others. These processes take place in special leather tanneries where the right equipment is available to make the process as easy and fast as possible.

How the Tanning Processes Work

The leather chemistry tanning processes work by introducing certain chemicals into the leather during treatment. In vegetable tanning, the process takes place using tannins which are basically vegetable ingredients from tree barks, fruits and even leaves. It often ends up in a supple brown leather color. Rose tanning on the other hand is a blend of vegetable and brain tanning. The result is one of the most expensive leather so far.
